Boy Scout Troop 298 Nome, Alaska
Troop 298 is in the Nome District of the Western Alaska Council, sponsored by the Nome Rotary Club.
It has been in existence in one form or another for forty years.
Boy Scouting is designed to take place outdoors. It is in the outdoor setting that Scouts share
responsibilities and learn to live with one another. It is here that the skills and activities
practiced at troop meetings come alive with purpose. Being close to nature helps Boy Scouts gain
an appreciation for God's handiwork and humankind's place in it. The outdoors is the laboratory for
Boy Scouts to learn ecology and practice conservation of nature's resources.
Troop 298 has a camp on the banks of the pristine Salmon Lake 35 miles north of Nome. The old
Quonset hut cabin was demolished and replaced by a new 16' x 24' cabin. It was built in Nome
by a local contractor and moved by truck to Salmon Lake. It will be used by Boy Scouts and
other youth organizations with outdoor activities that have the same outdoor ideals as the scouts.
The Boy Scout Troop 298 has participated in many outdoor activities including the following (see pics below):
- 50 Mile Hike
- Historic Trail Hike
- Serpentine Hot Springs fuel haul
- 20 mile Hike
- Eagle Projects
- Eagle Scout Court of Honor
- Other Hikes and Camps
